Kraft vs White Cake Boxes

Kraft or white is the first decision most people make when buying bakery boxes, and it is usually made on instinct in about four seconds. Here is what actually differs, and what does not.

The short answer

Kraft reads warm, natural and handmade. It suits cottage bakeries, farmers markets, sourdough, rustic and seasonal work, and anything sold on a story of being made by a person.

White reads clean, precise and premium. It suits wedding work, patisserie, corporate orders, and any brand whose logo is designed to sit on white.

Neither is stronger than the other. That is the myth worth killing first.

Strength: it is the weight, not the colour

People assume kraft is tougher because it looks industrial. It is not. Board strength is a function of grammage — grams per square metre — and construction, not colour. A 300 gsm kraft box and a 300 gsm white box behave almost identically under load.

What you should actually compare between suppliers is the gsm number. Many imported bakery boxes run 200 to 250 gsm to hit a price, and that is where the flimsiness complaints come from. Every box we make is 300 gsm in both finishes.

What genuinely differs

Kraft White (SBS)
Surface Uncoated, slightly textured Smooth clay-coated
Printing Ink sinks in; colours go muted and earthy. Dark inks work, pale inks disappear Ink sits on top; colours stay true. Fine detail and photographs reproduce properly
Stickers and labels Adhere well; matte labels blend, glossy ones can look stuck-on Adhere very well; foil, gloss and die-cut labels all sit cleanly
Marks and scuffs Hides fingerprints and handling marks Shows dirt, grease and scuffs more readily
Photographs Warm, forgiving in natural light Crisp, but can blow out under bright light
Reads as Artisanal, sustainable, personal Professional, hygienic, premium

Is kraft more eco-friendly?

Slightly, and less than the marketing implies. Kraft board skips the bleaching stage, so it uses fewer chemicals in production. But both are paperboard, both are recyclable, and both are compostable in the absence of a plastic window or coating. If sustainability genuinely matters to your buyers, the bigger lever is the window film, not the board colour — a plain box beats a windowed one on that measure regardless of finish.

Does the window change the answer?

Not really, but the aesthetics shift. A window on kraft looks like a farm-shop bake sale, in the good way. A window on white looks like a patisserie counter. Both sell the product before the box is opened, which is the actual job of a window.

What about price?

In our range they are close, with kraft usually a touch cheaper to produce. In the wider market kraft sometimes carries a small premium because it is currently in fashion. Do not choose on cost — the gap is a few cents and the branding difference is worth more than that.

The practical answer for most people

Buy the one your logo looks right on. If your brand is a dark stamp, a script logo, or anything hand-drawn, kraft. If it is a clean typographic mark, full-colour, or involves foil, white.

And if you truly cannot decide, carry both. A lot of our bakery customers use kraft for everyday counter sales and white for wedding and corporate orders, and buy in case quantity of each.

Try both before you commit

We will send you free samples of the same box in both finishes. Put your sticker on each and look at them side by side on your counter — that decides it faster than any article. Ask for samples.
